Hello to everybody.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic it was indeed very difficult to organize National Olympiads, and of course it required some changes in the organization process.

I was wondering how everybody organized their Olympiads during this difficult time.

Some of the countries have sent their past-year team, just like some of them did with IMO.

I would hope that not many countries did that. First of all, not many countries can (since students eligible for IOI 2019 can be non-eligible for IOI 2020); and second of all this denies a final year student who wasn't good enough to qualify for IOI 2019 a chance to compete for IOI 2020.

Latvia has managed to hold their national olympiad before lockdowns began and used Baltic Olympiad in Informatics to select its IOI team, where all Latvian contestants were assembled in a single location.

From what I know, Lithuania held their national olympiad online with multiple cameras for proctoring purposes; and then used BOI to select its IOI team.

In Egypt, it was held onsite. But off-course, social distancing was a must.

Brazil's TST happens in the year before. That means our team was selected in december 2019. It sucks because we aren't sending the best contestants in september 2020, just the best during december 2019; on the other hand, the virus did no harm to us :P

In Cuba the National Olympiad was held on February; at that time there wasn't any case of Covid in the country, so National Olympiad was held just like 2019's: an online 2 days-contest where the best 10 students of each province compete. But then Covid spread by the country, thus neither the Training Camp for top students or the Selection Contests for IOI were possible, so top 4 of National Olympiad are the ones going to IOI.

In Vietnam, IOIers are selected after 3 rounds:

  • NOI (National Olympiad): luckily, we had this contest before Covid
  • TST (Team Selection Test): luckily, we had a period of 90 days without new Covid cases, and we were able to organise this contest during that period.
  • APIO: this contest is online.

It's really lucky for us, and we have a really strong team this year: user202729_, JettyOller, atoiz, IceWiz
